By Rob Cummins
Kona Secrets is an honest, experience-driven look at what it really takes to qualify for the Ironman World Championships in Kona — not once, but consistently.
This isn’t a book about theory or shortcuts. It’s about action, consistency, and doing the work when motivation fades. Drawing on over 50 Kona qualifications, Rob Cummins shares the hard-earned lessons that took him from a back-of-the-pack beginner to multiple-time Kona qualifier.
Rob’s journey didn’t start with talent. It started in 1999, after quitting a 40–60 cigarettes-a-day habit and buying a mountain bike simply to stay off cigarettes. Early races ended dead last. Fitness came slowly. Confidence came even slower. Triathlon followed in 2003, Ironman in 2008, and years of trial, error, and learning followed.
After finishing his first Ironman in 12:27 and placing outside the top 1,000, Rob believed Kona was out of reach. But with structured training, consistency, and support from his wife Aisling — now his long-time coach — everything changed. Within months, he moved from mid-pack to top-40 overall, narrowly missing a Kona slot. Two years later, he qualified. And then he kept qualifying.
Kona Secrets breaks down what actually makes the difference:
This book is ideal for Ironman athletes, aspiring Kona qualifiers, and serious age-group triathletes who want practical insight from someone who has lived the process — not just studied it.
If Chasing Kona told the story, Kona Secrets explains the system behind the results.
