How does the cycle to work scheme work for the Department of Education; teachers

The Cycle to Work Scheme in Ireland is available to teachers, just like any other employed individuals in the country. Teachers, whether working in primary, secondary, or higher education institutions, can take advantage of this initiative to purchase bicycles and related equipment through their employers.

Here's how the Cycle to Work Scheme works for teachers in Ireland:

Eligibility:

Teachers who are employed by Department of Education schools or educational institutions that participate in the Cycle to Work Scheme are eligible to take advantage of this program. Most educational institutions, including schools, colleges, and universities, can opt to join the scheme.

Participation:

Selection of Bicycle and Equipment: Teachers can choose a bicycle and cycling equipment from registered vendors. The maximum allowable amount for purchase of a regular bike and accessories is capped at €1,250, e-bikes, electric bikes qualify for up to €1500, and the allowance foe a cargo bike is €3000.

Agreement with Employer: The teacher selects the desired items and informs their employer about their intention to participate in the scheme and fill out this form

Purchase by the Employer: The employer then purchases the selected bicycle and equipment on behalf of the teacher.

Salary Deductions: The cost of the bicycle and equipment is deducted from the teacher's gross salary over a specified period, usually up to 12 months. These deductions result in tax savings for the teacher. If you are on the higher rate of tax you will save up to 51%.

Benefits:

Financial Savings:

Participating in the Cycle to Work Scheme enables teachers to save money on their bicycle and equipment purchases through tax savings. By paying for these items through salary deductions, teachers can benefit from reduced income tax, PRSI, and USC. If you are on the higher rate of tax you will save up to 51%.

Health and Well-being:

Teachers can enjoy the health benefits associated with cycling, incorporating physical activity into their daily routine. Cycling to work helps improve cardiovascular health, increase stamina, and reduce stress levels.

Environmental Impact:

Opting for cycling instead of driving contributes to reducing the carbon footprint. Teachers can play their part in promoting a cleaner environment by choosing this zero-emission mode of transport.
